Proprietary Antimicrobial Agent

An international trailblazer in antimicrobial and odor protection, Microban technology inhibits the growth and reproduction of bacteria, mold, and mildew throughout the entire lifecycle of a product. The proprietary antimicrobial and odor control agent—developed by Microban International—can be custom formulated to fit specific applications and environments. “Artistry Flooring and Microban International have a long-standing relationship,” says Duane Jensen, President of Catalina Home, the parent company of Artistry Flooring. “Being Microban International’s only hardwood flooring partner has allowed us to differentiate ourselves from other manufacturers and puts us in our own category. Now more than ever, antimicrobial technology is so important and designers that understand the benefits of this technology can also carve their own niche.”

Microban offers built-in antimicrobial protection that defends Artistry products against microbes such as stain and odor causing bacteria by damaging or disrupting their internal systems. When microbes come into contact with the product surface, the Microban protection penetrates the cell wall of the microorganism and disrupts its cell functions, which makes the microorganism unable to function. “When the hardwood flooring surface becomes contaminated with bacteria, Microban technology penetrates the bacteria and inhibits its ability to reproduce, make food, or eliminate waste,” adds Jensen. Microban protection also affords minimal maintenance with an easy-to-clean surface. The Orleans collection is offered in two distinct patterns—herringbone and chevron—and a comprehensive collection of colorways, with a 100-percent pure hardwood construction for unsurpassed stability.

Built-In Technology and Testing

Artistry’s Orleans collection integrates Microban technology into the product during the manufacturing process. As a result, the odor-control and antimicrobial agents—which are combined with UV cured oil—become fundamental features of the products that will not wear away. “Microban technology combined with UV cured oil is applied twice during the manufacturing process therefore it becomes part of the molecular structure of our hardwood flooring,” explains Jensen. “Ultimately, Artistry Flooring with built-in Microban technology never washes off, works 24/7, and stays active for the life of the product.” As the Orleans flooring planks proceed through the finish roll coater applicators, the antimicrobial technology is UV cured and built-into two coating layers that lend the ultimate protection.

With a long history of safe use, Microban technology has undergone extensive independent laboratory testing and is registered with the EPA and other regulatory agencies in other countries for all applications in which it is used. “All Microban International approved products are subjected to stringent testing to verify they meet regulated antimicrobial efficacy requirements,” says Jensen. “Microban evaluates batch production samples submitted by Artistry Flooring in their microbiology product testing laboratory for verification of antimicrobial efficacy and proper antimicrobial loading levels. In addition, Microban procures random samples for product laboratory testing to continue monitoring the antimicrobial technology’s efficacy. This independent and random sampling process illustrates Artistry Flooring’s undeviated commitment to offering an unmatched specialized hardwood flooring option.”
