ASTM E662 Flammability

The ASTM E662 Specific Optical Density of Smoke Generated by Solid Materials test is a standard of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) that measures the visual density of smoke generated by a burning or smoldering material. Results obtained from this test are used by code officials in the acceptance of materials such as construction products, textiles, flooring, and other materials used in a variety of applications.

The scope of testing involves exposing test specimens to flame within a test chamber and recording the amount of light that is transmitted through the accumulating smoke caused by burning. A material is considered to pass the requirements if the average optical density value of three test specimens is 450 or less.
