A bevel edge is a straight planer cut added to the edges of a surface. According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), this cut should be at or around a 45-degree angle and greater than a .045-inches in depth. It can be created on different flooring and surface materials such as wood, stone, and vinyl, and emphasizes the separation of each individual piece of material. Adding a bevel to an edge minimizes the visual appearance of any inconsistencies in materials.
