Coated fabrics are created by bonding a coated layer to a textile substrate. The coated layer comes in either a liquid or film form and it can be applied to woven, knit, or non-woven substrates. Depending on the desired fabric properties such as durability, impermeability, resistance, environmental attributes, stretch and pliability, different top and substrate materials may be chosen. Surface texture can be added through embossing. Top layer finishes may add further protection. The most common coated fabric materials use vinyl, polyurethanes, and silicone. Typically, coated fabrics are used for upholstery and wallcovering due to the fact that the coating provides an extra layer that is desirable in commercial products and high traffic areas.
