COM refers to “customer own material,” which is a textile style selected by the specifier that is not part of the standard offering of a furniture manufacturer. If a COM is chosen, the specifier either has to purchase the textile from the textile provider and ship it to the manufacturer for application, or the manufacturer has to agree to purchase the textile on behalf of the specifier. In either case, COM process may add coordination and shipping time to the purchasing process, as the specifier has to verify with the manufacturer that the COM is suitable and with the COM provider that the material is available.
