Crewel Embroidery

Crewel embroidery, or crewelwork, is a type of free surface embroidery that uses a crewel or two-ply wool yarn. This heftier yarn gives embroidery patterns a signature thickness and texture. Because crewel is defined by the type of material used, it may use any embroidery stitch. Crewel embroidery goes back centuries, but the exact origin is unknown.
