Distressed refers to a material that has simulated marks of age and wear or has been purposely blemished so as to give the appearance of long, steady use. It can be applied to wood, metal, textile, glass, and stone through many methods such as hammering, denting, scraping, sanding, and filing. Chemical processes including bleaching, staining, pickling, and oxidation can also alter the appearance of a material’s surface.
