Standard expanded metal is a plate or sheet of metal that has been cut and stretched to form a mesh-like material. The most common expanded profile is a diamond shape because of its durability and ease of production but other profiles can be also achieved through the process. Micro expanded metal is an extremely fine mesh made from a thin gauge sheet metal with very small cuts, while flattened expanded metal refers to a post-production process by which the expanded sheets are cold rolled, which flattens them while increasing the strength and overall length.
