The GREENGUARD Certification Program—previously known as the GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification—recognizes products and processes that meet standards for safe levels of chemical and particle emissions in indoor spaces. GREENGUARD is a third-party assessment program created by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Environment to support manufacturers in producing safe products designed for indoor spaces, in accordance with strict VOC emissions standards. GREENGUARD standards can be applied to building materials, finishes, interior furniture, cleaning products, and electronics. All products, except cleaning products and electronics, are tested for indoor air quality (IAQ) in dynamic environmental chambers according to the Standard Method for Measuring and Evaluating Chemical Emissions from Building Materials, Finishes, and Furnishings Using Dynamic Environmental Chambers. GREENGUARD uses performance-based standards for permissible emission levels, the collection and handling of samples, toxicity limits, program application processes, and testing type and frequency. Products are screened for total VOCs, individual VOCs, formaldehyde, ozone, and phthalates. GREENGUARD certification standards follow benchmarks established by the EPA’s furniture-testing protocol, ASTM standards D-5116 and D-6670, the state of Washington’s standards for interior furnishings and construction materials, Germany’s Blue Angel Program, CDPH 01350, and the ISO 16000 testing series. Consumers can find all products certified by GREENGUARD on the free UL SPOT Sustainable Product Database, or by their GREENGUARD Certification logo.
