Heartwood refers to the wood that is at the core or center of a tree. It was formerly sapwood that died as the result of a chemical transformation that occurred when the tree strengthened to resist decay. In some tree species, the heartwood darkens making it very distinguishable from sapwood. Since heartwood does not contain nearly as much moisture as sapwood, it has a higher density and strength that makes it less likely to warp.
