Polyester is a category of synthetic petroleum-based fiber. It is one of the most popular synthetic fiber families that is often referred to as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Polyester can be manufactured as staple fibers, filament yarns, and mono filament yarns. Polyester is hydrophobic and can only dyed with disperse dye. Polyester fabric resists abrasion and stains, which makes it ideal for indoor upholstery and drapery use. With added flame retardants and lightfastness agents, polyester is applicable for outdoor upholstery as well. Polyester is the most common material for apparel and interior fabrics. However, polyester is a non-renewable material that can only be recycled and re-extruded into the yarn.
