Surface pile density, or average pile yarn density, is a measurement of how densely packed the surface pile yarns are in a cubic yard of carpet. Expressed in ounces per cubic yard, the weight of the pile yarn is calculated using the following formula: pile weight multiplied by 36 and divided by pile height.
